2018 Sir Thomas Lipton Cup Results
July 2-3, 2018

The Sir Thomas Lipton Cup is one of the oldest, and certainly among the largest at the Seattle Yacht Club. While visiting Seattle in 1911 Sir Thomas Lipton was so impressed with the physical beauty of the area, the hospitality of his hosts and what he saw as perfect sailing waters, that he promised to commemorate his visit by donating a perpetual challenge cup to the Seattle Yacht Club. Upon his return to London, Sir Thomas commissioned the cup, which arrived in 1913 and was first contested in 1914 by the "R" boats "Sir Tom" of Seattle YC and "Turenga" of Royal Vancouver YC, Canada. With the demise of the "R" class, the Lipton Cup became the main trophy for the International 6 Metre Class in the Northwest post WWII. Winners of the Cup, including boat name, skipper, and crew, have been inscribed on the Cup or on small plaques encircling the base, for the past 90+ years.

Cold and dreary for the Lipton Cup this year. Temperatures barely got got out of the 50's (10 celsius) both days of the Lipton Cup but fortunately there was 5-8 knots of wind, enough to make for a quality race series. The competitors were essentially the same 9 crews from the NA's the previous weekend minus Saskia which had a date with a container for the Europeans in France.

The race results saw a strong showing again by the former two time World Cup winning modern St Francis IX sailed by Reigh North and crew from Vancouver winning the Cup. This is her final appearance before leaving for a new home in England. Kimo Mackey's classic Saga turned in a stellar showing with Eric Bentzen and crew finishing second as she did the previous week with Chris Henderson driving. Quality individual races were put in by the Intermediate St. Francis V and the classic Elizabeth 10 and the modern Max' inux.

The dinner Saturday by Erin Parker night was so good everyone pretty much forgot how cold it was.
